1. ALT news
1.1 The full call for proposals for the 2011 ALT conference is now live
at http://www.alt.ac.uk/guidelines_papers.html. The call closes on 21
February 2011.
1.2 ALT Journal Volume 18, Issue 3 has just been published. “The
transformational impact of learning technology” is a Special Issue
jointly edited by Martin Hall, Vice-Chancellor of Salford University,
John Bourne, Executive Director of the Sloan Consortium, and Mike
Keppell, Director of the Flexible Learning Institute at Charles Sturt
University. There are links to each article in the special issue in
Section 9 below.
1.3 International prize for NIACE's digital learning work.
The NIACE team that was runner up in the 2010 ALT Learning Technologist
of the Year Team Award has won first prize in the UNESCO-sponsored 2010
King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and

1.4 ALT/eLN's webinar, “Learning in 2020”, featuring Gilly Salmon and
Clive Shepherd was held on 6 December 2010 with over 70 participants.

2. ALT events
2.1 Don't Lecture Me – a follow-on webinar with Donald Clark. Donald's
ALT-C keynote speech caused controversy at the time, and has been viewed
over 3000 times on ALT's YouTube channel. Donald has kindly agreed to
run a free lunchtime webinar focusing on the evidence that unrecorded
lectures fail learner. The webinar will be at 12 noon on Tuesday 18

2.2 Free and Open Educational Resources – a NIACE workshop organised on
15 February 2011 in partnership with ALT
Summary: A wide range of learning resources are freely available over
the internet. How can we make best use of these for adult learners? Some
of these resources have been explicitly published as “Open Educational
Resources” (OERs), and they include traditional learning materials and
also resources such as video, audio and software. To make best use of
them teachers are adopting new practices to help them locate, adapt and
adopt what they find. A 28% discount is available for ALT individual
member and for the staff of ALT organisational and sponsoring members.

2.3 ALT-C 2011 - "Thriving in colder and more challenging climate" ALT's
18th international annual conference will be held 6-8 September at the
University of Leeds. Keynote speakers will include Miguel Brechner, Head
of Uruguay's Plan Ceibal, under which all children and teachers in
public schools in Uruguay have received their own laptop and
connectivity to the Internet, and John Naughton, Professor of the Public
Understanding of Technology at the Open University, and the Observer's
technology columnist. Conference co-chairs: John Cook, Professor of
Technology Enhanced Learning at the Learning Technology Research
Institute, London Metropolitan University and Sugata Mitra, Professor of
Educational Technology at Newcastle University. Full details at

2.4 In response to the recent discussion on the ALT-MEMBERS email list
we are working on a one day event about lecture capture, with a possible
follow up event about the use of technology to support effective large
group teaching. The lecture capture event will take place before Easter
2011. We intend to make an announcement in the next 2 to 3 weeks.
2.5 ALT runs a number of one-day conferences, workshops and webinars
throughout the year for its members. If you have an idea for a workshop
or a webinar, please email Hayley Maisey, ALT Head of Operations and

run a workshop/webinar at which you might be a presenter, and in demands
for a workshop/webinar on a topic or theme that you feel represents a
gap that needs filling.

3.3 BBC News School Report the overall winner in the MEDEA Awards 2010
The BBC’s School Report which gives 11-14 year-old students in the UK
the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience was the
overall winner of this year’s MEDEA Awards. To find about the

3.4 A new online resource about collaborative online
JISC infoNet is pleased to announce a new infoKit (online resource) that
examines the use of collaborative online tools to support the
interactions between further and higher education and its business and
community partners. The infoKit is the result of a JISC funded project –
The Trialling of Collaborative Online Tools for Business and Community
Engagement – in which 8 trials, situated in different contexts, used a
variety of tools. The contexts include lifelong learning, collaboration
within and across regions, international businesses involved in
curriculum delivery, a community of practice, and Knowledge Transfer
