Dates: 30th and 31st March, 2011
Venue: John McIntyre Centre, Pollock Halls, Edinburgh, EH16 5AY, UK.

Speakers: Steff Lewis, Gillian McHugh, Gordon Murray and Anne Whitehead
of the Edinburgh and Northwest Hubs for Trials Methodology Research
Summary of workshop:
The purpose of the workshop is to provide training in appropriate
methods of analysis for ordinal outcome data in clinical trials.
Talk topics:
i. Description of methods: brief discussion of binary methods,
proportional odds, sliding dichotomy, continuous data methods that can
be used for longer scales (parametric and non-parametric)
ii. Why using ordinal methods are better than binary data analysis and
which of them are best in which circumstances.
iii. Design of studies, power and sample size
iv. Model checking, fitting and interpretation.
v. How these methods would be extended to meta-analysis including
individual patient data meta-analysis (this topic will be included if
time allows)
The format will be a mixture of talks and practical sessions including
design workshops, discussion sessions, and interpretation of SAS
computer code and output. Participants should be able to use all of the
techniques described in practice by the end of the course. Due to
practicality and time constraints, we will not have a hands-on computing
session.
Target Audience:
Biostatisticians, and epidemiologists and other health researchers with
strong quantitative skills and experience in statistical analysis.
Examples will be presented using SAS code, and so familiarity with the
package is highly desirable. They will also be presented in another
package, depending on participants’ practice.
Workshop Fee:
There is no workshop fee. Course materials, refreshments, lunches, and
one evening meal are included. Participants must pay for their own
accommodation and transport.
Registration:
Please complete and return a registration form. These can be obtained
from Morag Leitch, email [log in to unmask] (although please be
