Hi Nick,
That's a really good point about making language content searchable.
And also about quality control - it's something we have to consider in this process.
Thanks for your help,
Jenny

Dear Jenny,
I was involved in developing the web site for the art and history museum in
Geneva, Switzerland. http://www.ville-ge.ch/mah/?langue=eng
As you would expect, all the content has to be in several languages - French,
English and German are supported - and the translation is expected to be better
than just 'good enough'. Consequently, we designed the CMS to store all the
content in multiple languages (using a 'language' attribute on each field). A
major advantage of doing this (over translating on the fly) is that the site is
google-searchable in the different languages. Obviously, it's a lot of work to
maintain all this, but there really isn't any way around it if you want quality
results. I suppose the question I would ask is whether non-English
speakers using your website would be happy with instant? ;-)
Best wishes

Subject: Google Translate
Hi everyone,
I'm working on a project with the National Gallery around foreign
language content online.
I was wondering what approach other Museums/Galleries have taken when it
comes to offering foreign language content. Do you offer a simple
information page in different languages or do you attempt to translate
some/all of your website?
In particular, I was wondering if anyone has experience of implementing
Google Translate (or similar) on their websites?
Thoughts on its success/failures or if it was rejected in favour of a
different approach would be really appreciated.
Many thanks,
Jenny
