Dear Colleagues
Following an award from the European Commission under the highly competitive EMJD scheme, and as co-ordinator, the University of Kent is delighted to invite applications for an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral (EMJD) programme.

Text and Event in Early Modern Europe (TEEME) is an international doctoral programme in early modern studies funded by the European Union under the Erasmus Mundus scheme. This innovative three-year programme represents a unique collaboration between university-based researchers in the humanities and the cultural and creative sectors in the UK, Germany, Portugal, Czech Republic, integrating the study of the past with its impact on the present. The key aim is to promote greater historical awareness of shared European origins as well as foster exchange among diverse cultures and offer a unique learning experience to EU and International students.
TEEME is designed to prepare a new generation of research leaders, cultural managers and policymakers for the demands of the 21st century in which historical forgetfulness and cultural amnesia threaten the integration of an increasingly interconnected world. Combining the study of history, literature and culture with a focus on the interface between past and present, the programme's centre of interest is the early modern period (c1400 to c1700) - the foundation age of the current world order with its political divisions and economic dependencies. You relate this period to current issues and concerns by focusing on the enduring traces that early modern texts and events have left, and still leave, on the globalised world today. The University of Kent, in the UK, is the co-ordinating institution and the location of the first of six semesters. You study at two or more of the participating universities and in at least two languages, one of which is English (see opposite page), and the programme includes strands in both research and skills training.
The TEEME consortium combines four exceptionally strong research environments that represent centres of national and international excellence in the following EU universities:
. University of Kent, UK
. Freie Universität Berlin, Germany
. Universidade da Porto, Portugal
. Univerzita Karlova v Praze,Czech Republic.
As well as the partner universities, there are established formal links with 30 institutions representing the cultural and creative industries of the partner countries within and beyond the EU.
Best wishes
