Dr Freywald will discuss the newest addition to the spectrum of
varieties of the German language: “Kiezdeutsch”, a multiethnolect that
is currently developing among adolescents in urban areas across Germany.
She will first present the sociolinguistic situation in which these new
linguistic practices emerge, focussing on data from inner-city Berlin.
Speakers of Kiezdeutsch come from a range of different ethnicities,
including the majority one (i.e. white German). Their (alleged) low
socio-economic status results in ideological imputations as evinced in
the recent public discourse on issues of a multicultural society.
Consequently, Kiezdeutsch is becoming the German low-prestige variety
/par excellence/.
In the second part of her paper Dr Freywald will present an overview of
grammatical characteristics of Kiezdeutsch. The fact that the speakers
bring multilingual competences with them contributes to a dynamic
setting of language contact supporting a faster pace of language change
and makes Kiezdeutsch something of a pioneer for grammatical
developments already in progress in German. The linguistic innovations
interact with well-known characteristics of contact languages such as
reductions in the domains of morphology and other grammatical markers
and a higher reliance on pragmatic support.
