I'm sure that members of the German list will want to see this too.

Dear all,
I am using the mailing list to publicise a cross-disciplinary campaign for
the defence of the arts, social sciences and humanities, 'Humanities and
Social Sciences Matter'. I would be very grateful for your support. Please
take the time to read and (preferably) sign as soon as possible. Please
also pass this on to any other networks of which you are part. As
linguists we have privileged access to international networks and can play
a critical role in publicizing this campaign worldwide.
Begun by Professor Nicola Miller at UCL, this campaign aims to represent
everyone concerned about the effects of the current proposals for the
funding of university teaching, in particular the withdrawal of support
from Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. It is attracting widespread
support from academics and public figures who believe that a more
considered approach to the future of higher education and to the idea of
the university in contemporary life is vital.
We urgently need more supporters and collaborators if we are to make our
case to the government. Please sign our petition and visit our website.
Please also circulate this message and these links to all members of your
departments and all your students, and to all others who you think may be
interested, inside or outside the universities, including of course
colleagues in the science subjects, with whom co-ordination and
support is warmly welcomed.

Please contact us via the website if you would be interested in
contributing to the campaign in other ways. The campaign is actively
looking to widen its membership into Arts subjects, and would welcome more
collaborators.
Please also note that this is a new campaign, and we are updating our
webpage information as fast as possible to keep pace with events, so it
will be changed and added to frequently in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your help.
Best wishes,
Jane
