We are launching a project to redevelop our website which will include standard information pages, our collection online, our shop and ticketing. The shop, ticketing and website each have user registration and their functionality is completely distinct.
At the moment we are intending to aim towards that nirvana of the user being able to use the same login information across the 3 functional areas of the site (which may or may not mean there is one registration) as well as being able to provide a single shopping basket so someone can buy tickets and items from the shop at the same time.
I know a lot of museums etc are moving (or have tried to move) in a similar direction and I would be very interested in hearing anything about lessons learned including the issues encountered when trying similar integrations. I believe this state of nirvana isn’t only a technical challenge but an organisational one as well.
