The Freedom of Information Act enables public access to scientists'
research data, but can scientific knowledge really be extracted in
this way? Scientists should engage with the public, but need to find a
less confrontational and more meaningful method of doing so, advise

The idea that "information" should be freely available has become a
central feature of what, in the 21st century, we expect from a
well-functioning democracy. Words such as "openness" and
"transparency" litter the rhetoric of public policy discourse. They
are also characteristics that for many define good science.
