Earthwatch’s learning programme involves the design, development, delivery and evaluation of a range of experiential learning programmes, all focused on developing environmental leadership and sustainable behaviours & practices. Our programmes run across multiple audiences: corporate partners; educators; youth & students; emerging scientists; members of the public. The team is also responsible for building Earthwatch’s internal organisational capability and capacity to deliver high quality learning experiences.
The Oman Earthwatch Programme (OEP) brings our research and learning approaches together, as we work in partnership with the Omani Government to develop a cadre of research and development specialists and an education sector with an active understanding of environmental conservation issues.
We are currently recruiting for a Senior Learning Manager to join Earthwatch’s growing learning team, leading our learning programme with Educators, Youth and Conservation Professionals, with specific programme focus on the Oman Earthwatch Programme.
Your core responsibilities will be to:
· Lead the development, delivery and evaluation of the Oman Earthwatch Learning Programme with a particular focus on place-based education to develop environmental conservation understanding in the education sector and amongst conservation professionals
· Outreach into schools and feed the research results from the OEP into the National Curriculum
· Develop a training programme for Rangers to build their research techniques and knowledge of the research projects local to them
· Provide functional leadership and management, including line management of the Emerging Scientists Learning Manager and input to training & development for field-based research teams
· Lead development & rollout of Educators, Youth and Conservation Professional audiences learning strategies, in line with the organisational strategies
· Input to scoping and developing new Educator, Youth and Conservation Professional learning programme opportunities
· Bring in up to date thinking on innovative approaches to transformational learning, system change and sustainable leadership development
Other components of the job will be to: build and maintain strong networks and relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally, ensuring that all learning programmes are aligned to the programme requirements, Earthwatch research, engagement & learning strategies and are effective in developing environmental leaders.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
· An experienced education and learning practitioner with at least 7 years relevant experience in education working with schools, teachers and young people. Understanding of environmental education desirable.
· Extensive knowledge of learning, training and development principles and practices and how these relate to environmental behaviour change
· Experienced in using participatory approaches, including participatory action research and place-based education
· A track record of success in designing, delivering and evaluating complex learning programmes for educators, youth and/or conservation professionals
· Understanding, knowledge and experience of working in the Middle East
· Familiarity with working in multi-cultural environments and ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity
· Understanding of and passion for environmental conservation, education and the sustainability agenda
· High emotional intelligence with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience in working effectively in cross-functional, multi-geography & multi-organisation teams
· Ability to think creatively to identify business relevant opportunities and solutions for sustainability learning programmes
· Ability to translate strategy into actionable plans which deliver against business plan objectives
· Credible and persuasive - able to represent Earthwatch Learning to the corporate sector
· Strong leadership - able to work off own initiative
* International travel will be necessary, including regular and extended travel to Oman, so flexibility is required
