If you are free this Friday, then pop along the After Hours at the Natural History Museum. View the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, have a glass of wine, and come along to our Discussing Nature event;
Exploring the Final Frontiers
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats-on/events/programs/naturelive/exploring_the_final_frontiers.html?date=26.11.2010
The thirst for knowledge and exploration drives science and humanity. Voyages of discovery pepper our past, but after thousands of years on Earth, humans have yet to chart all the land's surface, explore the ocean's depths or discover the secrets of our solar system.
Join us as three scientists put forward their case for a fictional funding pot to explore these uncharted territories. Learn how much we know of each of these amazing environments and just how much is yet to be discovered. Plus see some specimens from our treasured collections.
Tickets £8 each (£7.20 members) plus £1.50 booking fee. Please visit phone 020 7942 5725, or book online at
http://www.nhmshop.co.uk/tickets/discussing-nature/events-listing.html?month=201011&day=26
There will be a bar and nibbles available througout the event.
Speakers are;
Dr Adrian Glover
Adrian is a marine biologist in the Zoology Department of the Natural History Museum. His focus is on the ecology, biodiversity and evolutionary origins of marine segmented worms, which are extremely diverse in the deep sea - the largest, yet most poorly sampled environment on the planet.
Dr Chris Lyal
A researcher working in the Entomology Department of the NHM, Chris specialises in understanding the evolution and classification of weevils (a huge group of beetles) and the description and discrimination of weevil species. His research has taken him around the world, including Panama, Thailand and New Zealand.
Dr Dominik Hezel
Dominik is a meteorite researcher in the Mineralogy Department of the Museum. His work focuses on the formation and evolution of the early solar system, through studying the composition of certain meteorites. Dominik has previously worked at the University of Hawaii and the Max Planck Institute.
