Portland Cement manufacture produces large amounts of CO2 due to energy use and the calcination of CaCO3. Recent data on global CO2 emissions from Portland Cement manufacture give an overall average of 0.88 tonnes per tonne of cement produced. Portland Cement manufacture consequently accounts for about 7.5% of total global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The pressure to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions during cement manufacture has led the industry to increase the extent to which Portland clinker is substituted in conventional cements by other ingredients that are currently approved in the existing norms, such as granulated blast furnace slag (ggbs), pulverized fuel ash (pfa), natural pozzolans and limestone.
The papers at this meeting will present and review recent attempts to develop novel cements based on alternative clinkers with intrinsically lower energy requirements and CO2 emissions in manufacture than conventional Portland Cement clinkers. It will be shown that durable concrete can be made with cements based on calcium sulfoaluminate clinkers, reactive magnesia, alkali activated ashes, and magnesium silicates. The presentations will both outline the work conducted in various research establishment laboratories with these novel cements and describe full scale industrial trials producing diverse products including wet cast concrete, concrete blocks, and concrete roofing tiles.
