Nanoparticles have now become a standard tool in many biological applications – for example, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are now readily available from numerous sources as optical imaging agents, and other emerging techniques and materials hold considerable promise as diagnostic or potential therapeutic agents. The use of cadmium selenide (CdSe)-based semiconductor quantum dots in biology was first reported in 1998, and initiated an avalanche of research, resulting in hundreds of papers, many in high-impact journals such as Nature and Science.
The use of semiconductor nanoparticles in bio-labelling is however not without controversy; the cadmium content has lead to cytotoxicological issues and although it appears that processing the nanoparticles can reduce the toxicity to a degree, the use of cadmium in health applications has been poorly received and is unlikely to become a standard in hospitals or imaging laboratories.
This presentation will describe our work to find alternatives to QDs and report some of our initial results
