As Ashes fever grips Australia, even the wildlife is having a pop at the
Poms. England cricketer Ian Bell will take to the field in the first Test,
starting on Thursday in Brisbane, bearing the scars of a brush with the
Queensland fauna.
Batsman Bell and team mates James Anderson and Stuart Broad did not fall
foul of a snake, spider or crocodile as one might expect, but an angry
magpie, which attacked them as they warmed up for the series with a round of
golf.
Bell was left with a cut to his nose after the incident, according to the
Daily Telegraph, but the paper says he was lucky to escape a more serious
injury.
It explains that Brisbane's magpies become very aggressive during nesting
season and often attack humans, swooping down and pecking at their eyes.
Fortunately Bell was wearing sunglasses and, although they came off in the
attack, they may have prevented a far worse outcome.
After attacking Bell and drawing blood, the angry bird then began
dive-bombing fast bowler Anderson and all-rounder Broad, who were in a golf
buggy. They reportedly fought off the marauding magpie with their clubs.
