Dear All,
Alessandro Palmero (University of Canterbury, New Zealand) will be giving an
EPICentre seminar next Tuesday 30th November at 5.30pm.
Venue: Room 218, Chadwick Building, UCL
Topic Title: "Lessons Learnt from the 4 September 2010 Darfield Earthquake"
Abstract: On September 4, 2010, the previously unknown Greendale fault
ruptured releasing a magnitude 7.1 earthquake. The earthquake was 30-40km
away from the city of Christchurch, where in many parts the Modified
Mercalli Intensity Level was in excess of MM8. Despite the estimation of 6
billions losses induced by the earthquake, no victims have been registered.
Despite the overall Canterbury portfolio of structures performed extremely
well, due to the particular nature of the soil, liquefaction and lateral
spreading caused extensive road disruption and damage to the houses. The
results of preliminary findings and visual inspections carried out soon
after the earthquake are herein illustrated. Particular attention will be
given to the damage sustained by timber houses, unreinforced masonry,
reinforced concrete buildings, bridges and non structural components (racks,
ceilings, partitions, facades).
Please forward to colleagues who may be interested.
Kind regards,
Bhupinder
