The *Foundation for the Sociology of Health Illness* [
http://www.shifoundation.org.uk/], the charity which owns the journal of
that name, provides a number of award schemes including post-doctoral
fellowships, collaborative PhD studentships, support for postgraduate
participation in international conferences, support for symposia or
workshops, and research initiation grants.
Applications are now invited for the following schemes:
**Mildred Blaxter Post-Doctoral Fellowships *
This award is named for Professor Mildred Blaxter, a previous editor of the
journal Sociology of Health and Illness, in recognition of her contribution
to the discipline.
The Fellowship will provide support for individuals who have recently
completed a PhD in the field of sociology of health and illness to enable
them to disseminate findings of their thesis through publications and
presentations and/or to develop a new programme of work related to their
thesis.
The award will provide full salary costs for one year (including on-costs
but not estate or indirect costs), at spine point 29 (£28,983 in 2010-11),
and £2,500 for research and/or conference expenses. Two post-doctoral
fellowships will be awarded in 2010-11. The deadlines for application are
15 January 2011 and 1 June 2011

**Collaborative PhD Studentships *
The SHI Foundation Collaborative Studentship award is for £12,000 and is
conditional on the Department itself providing additional funding to meet
the full cost of student fees, a maintenance allowance at least equivalent
to that provided by the ESRC and reasonable research expenses.
Application for full-time and part-time studentships will be considered with
part-time awards made on a pro-rata basis. Up to three new 1 + 3 or + 3 PhD
studentships will be awarded to start in 2011-12. The deadline for
application is 15 February 2011.

The Foundation also supports the following awards schemes.
**Postgraduate International Conference Travel Grants*
The Foundation has established a fund for international conference costs,
including registration fees and travel, for postgraduate students presenting
medical sociology papers at relevant international conferences. Up to £750

**Symposia & Workshops *
The Foundation provides up to £2,500 to support one-day symposia or
workshops and up to £3,500 to support two-day or longer meetings. Further

**Research Initiation Grants*
The Foundation offers up to £10k to support medical sociologists needing
funding to prepare major research bids. The funding is available to cover
topics such as collaborators travel, a preliminary collaborators meeting,
