Some investigation turns up this article (Google docs preview):
http://tinyurl.com/2edjl7n
...which says it is mentioned in a book by Claudia Kinmonth (1993)
titled _Irish Country Furniture_. She apparently reports that a maker
of "Sligo chairs" from the 1930s asserted that "...[in the old time]
there were no other kinds of chairs and there should be seven
different kinds of wood -- the seven woods of the cross: ash, alder,
etc."
Which does make me wonder how old this idea of seven woods making up
the cross actually is. It could be older, or it could be something
along the lines of the supposed "Celtic alphabet of trees," which is
known to be a modern idea.
