Reminder Call for Papers
Civic Cultures
International Conference, Communication and Media Department, Lund University, Sweden, March 31st 2011. Organisers Professor Annette Hill, Michael Rübsamen and Tina Askanias.
The idea of civic cultures encapsulates our engagement with the political and non-political in social and cultural life. This conference is a unique opportunity for leading scholars from around the world to present their work on citizenship, public spheres, political communication, political economy, media and democracy, audiences, new media and society. Such a multidisciplinary approach from sociology, politics, media, communication and cultural studies, offers a wide perspective on political engagement today.
The conference will be organised thematically, focusing on the integrated circuits of civic cultures located around ideas of knowledge, values, trust, spaces, practices and identities. We welcome research that explores themes of media and public spheres, political communication, citizens and citizenship. Papers should address one or more of the following research questions - how is the political embedded within culture and society? In what ways can cultural and social practices open up understanding of political engagement and disengagement? How does the idea of civic cultures connect with critical social and cultural theory? The objective of the conference is to learn more about how social and cultural practices shape and are shaped by the political in people’s lives.
The schedule includes a combination of keynote addresses, pre-constituted panels, and open panels. Confirmed keynote speakers include John Corner and Stephen Coleman (Leeds University, UK), Peter Dahlgren (Lund University, Sweden) and Liesbet Van Zoonen (Loughborough University, UK. Other invited speakers include Maria Bakardjieva (University of Calgary, Canada), Göran Bolin (Södertörn University, Sweden), Bart Cammaerts (LSE, UK), Nico Carpentier (Free University, Belgium), Christian Christensen (Uppsala University, Sweden), Mats Ekström (Örebro University, Sweden), Tobias Olsson (Jönköping University, Sweden).
