*With apologies for cross posting*
The British Library Preservation Advisory Centre and RLUK are pleased to announce a training day:
Preservation Basics
London: 26 January 2011
British Library Centre for Conservation
96 Euston Road
London NW1 2DB
http://www.bl.uk/blpac/basics.html
Preservation of collections is an important part of the day to day work of librarians and archivists who have to maintain access to collections. The day will explore what is meant by preservation; highlight the risks to collections and show how to minimise those risks with simple, cost-effective actions. The day is targeted at those who are new to the preservation of library and archive collections. By the end of the day, participants will be able to:
* define what is meant by preservation;
* give examples of the frameworks used for preservation management;
* identify the main threats to library and archive collections;
* identify factors to consider when storing physical and digital items;
* handle physical items correctly;
* find other sources of information to support their preservation work.
Previous attendees found that the day gave a "good overview of issues - feel generally better informed." and helped with "options for storing material, key environmental issues, best handling methods. Lots more of little bits of very helpful information."
This event is part of a Preservation Learning Programme jointly sponsored by RLUK and the British Library Preservation Advisory Centre.
