Dear All,
The MDSG (www.mdsg.org.uk) is a specialist group of the Geological Society of London that exists to promote the study and understanding of mineral deposits and mineralisation processes. We are keen to foster these interests in students and I would therefore be grateful if you would consider nominating a student for our project prize:
The MDSG project prize* - £250
This prize is open to all undergraduate (BSc, MSci, MGeol) project dissertations which have a subject area related to mineral deposits in the broadest sense (mapping of mineralisation, deposit genetic studies, structure of mineralisation and mineralised rocks, ore mineralogy, mineral processing, environmental impacts). Winner 2010: Ryan Bartlett, University of Leicester.
* only eligible for UK based students
This will be assessed by a panel of MDSG members from Academia and Industry.
Nominations should be sent to myself at BGS by Friday 26 November, and all material will be returned after our AGM. We require a copy of the project itself, but it would facilitate judging in December if an electronic version was also supplied if possible. NB Just one submission per institution please. If an electronic copy is to be supplied, please email me in the first instance so that I can contact you regarding instructions on where to send this (so that my email account is not closed by huge files arriving).
Our next AGM will held at the Natural History Museum on 5-7th January 2011. There will also £250 prizes for the best student poster and oral presentation at the meeting awarded by Rio Tinto and Anglo American. MDSG also provides significant financial support towards student attendance at the meeting; details are on the MDSG website.
Best regards to all,
Antony Benham
Secretary/Treasurer MDSG
