Art, Interaction and the Active Audience
Art is increasingly interactive. Audiences are less inclined to just
passively observe what the artist has made. They want to be active
and have part of the action. I started work on various kinds of
creative interactive artworks 40 years ago. Compared to those early
days we not only have very sophisticated technologies we also have a
much greater understanding of audience experience and how to shape
it. I will describe the trajectory of the work that my students and I
have followed, covering a range of interactive artworks and the
understandings that we have developed about the active audience. The
talk will re-visit the Cornock/Edmonds classifications of interactive
art first proposed in 1970 and discuss how they can be revised and
extended in today's context.
ERNEST EDMONDS is a pioneering digital artist, an international
expert on human-computer interaction and, specifically, creativity
and the Creative Industries. He first used computers in his art
practice in 1968. He is Professor of Computation and Creative Media
in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the
University of Technology, Sydney, where he runs a multi-disciplinary
practice-based art and technology research group, the Creativity and
Cognition Studios.. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Transactions, fast
track, section of the MIT Press journal Leonardo and a Co-Editor of
the journal. He has exhibited throughout the world, from Moscow to
LA, and has more than 200 refereed publications in the fields of
