Dear Mr Stefanidis,
You may like to know that my father, Michael Roberts, worked in the
European Service of the BBC from 1941 to 1945. He was in the Intelligence
Dept., 1941-3, and Clandestine Press Editor, 1943-44. H e was briefly in
charge of the Czech section, May- August 1944. In December 1944 he became a
European Talks Editor. However, I don't think he had any special links with
the Balkans; his particular concerns were with Belgium and the Netherlands.
You may find it worth while to consult the papers of Douglas Ritchie and
Noel Newsome in the Churchill Archive, Cambridge. Papers relating to my
father's BBC work are in the Michael Roberts archive, National Library of
Scotland (Edinburgh), Acc. 13145; they include a nearly complete set of his
205 broadcasts for the clandestine press of occupied Europe.
There is an article about my father in the Oxford Dictionary of
National Biography (2004).
All good wishes,
(Prof.) Andrew D.Roberts
