Tenure-track Position in Sociology
Higher School of Economics - Faculty of Sociology
The Higher School of Economics (HSE) invites applications for a tenure
track position in sociology at its campuses in Moscow and
Saint-Petersburg. We welcome candidates with excellent backgrounds in
all sub-fields of sociology. Priority will be given to those candidates
with a proven ability to conduct high-level research based upon
empirical techniques and appropriate research designs and methods.
Applicants with experience of teaching advanced courses for graduate
students (at both Masters and PhD levels) are especially welcomed.
The HSE is a major Russian university aspiring to enhance its profile as
an internationally recognized research university. The HSE is the only
Russian university in the social sciences to receive the status of a
"National Research University" by the Russian federal government. The
candidate would be expected to publish in reputable peer-reviewed
journals with research support provided by the university's Centre for
Advanced Studies - a collaborative endeavor with Moscow's New Economic
School -- and work with research groups in the Faculty of Sociology.
Candidates can apply for positions at the main campus in Moscow or in
Saint-Petersburg. A working knowledge of Russian would be an asset.
The tenure track appointments will start in September 2011, for 3 years
in the first instance.
Successful candidates are required to hold a PhD degree in sociology by
the time of the commencement of the appointment. The degree should be
from a program with a strong research orientation. University teaching
experience is important. It is desirable that the candidate have at
least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal and a clear potential
for further professional development. Serious commitment to research and
university teaching in Russia is essential. The salary range in the
2011-2012 academic year will be 1.2 - 1.5 million Russian rubles
annually (approximately $ 40-50 K per year at the current exchange rate)
depending on experience and qualifications (and income tax is a flat
13%). An exceptionally promising candidate could be considered for a
higher salary. The HSE salaries are indexed to inflation. In addition to
travel support and other benefits, significant research grants can be
provided.

Interested applicants should submit their CV, a recent research paper, a
statement of research interest and at least 2 letters of reference. The
submission of applications by email to Professor Martin Gilman,
Director, Centre for Advanced Studies ([log in to unmask]) by the end of
November 2010 is encouraged for early consideration but in any case no
later than January 21, 2011.
