Head of Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics [Ref. C/051/19]
The University was ranked 105th in Social Sciences and 107th in Arts and Humanities according to the Quacquarelli Symonds 2010 survey. With the aims to fulfill the new teaching mission under the soon to be implemented four-year undergraduate degree system, and promote cross-disciplinary and innovative research, the College of Humanities and Social Studies is vigorously rethinking its strategies, and rebuilding its structure over the coming years or so. The new Head of Department will play a major role in preparing the College for the coming decade.
The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics offers programmes of study at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in areas such as Chinese/translation and interpretation/comparative cultural studies/linguistics and language technology/cultural and heritage management.
The Department encourages and promotes research in such areas as the study of Chinese language and literature, linguistics, heritage studies, and translation and cross-cultural studies. Research emphases in the Department include translation (machine and human), cultural and heritage management, corpus linguistics, language and law, computer assisted language learning, phonetics, comparative literature, terminology and scholarship in Chinese and other Asian languages.
Qualifications for Appointment
The Head of Department will provide strong academic leadership in the development of teaching and research within the Department, as well as providing effective managerial leadership. Candidates should possess a PhD with strong academic and professional qualifications, substantial relevant experience in tertiary education, an internationally recognized record of research and scholarship, and demonstrated ability to work collegially in an academic environment.
Salary and Conditions of Service
The successful candidate will be offered appointment to the rank of Professor or Chair Professor commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointee will be offered the headship appointment concurrently for an initial period of three years. The remuneration package will be very attractive, driven by market competitiveness and individual performance.
