The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts
in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist
clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and
research.

The Trust comprises of three hospitals - the John Radcliffe and
Churchill Hospitals in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury.

The Centre for Statistics in Medicine in Oxford (Director: Professor
Doug Altman) carries out collaborative medical research projects, a
methodological research programme, and teaching. Members of the Centre
have a particular interest in randomised controlled trials, systematic
reviews, prognostic and diagnostic studies.

The Centre currently employs 15 statisticians and other researchers and
is part of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, University of
Oxford. The Centre has recently relocated to an attractive site at
Wolfson College. For further information about the Centre, visit
http://www.csm-oxford.org.uk/ .

Applications are invited for a medical statistician to join the NHS
statistical support team, currently comprising 5 statisticians. The
support team provides statistical input to the Research Design Service
South Central and expert statistical input into collaborative health
research. Projects include phase II-III national and international
randomised controlled trials and observational studies.

The statistician typically collaborates directly with the lead
researcher, taking responsibility for the design, analysis and clear
interpretation in public dissemination. Some projects are in
collaboration with the Oxford Clinical Trials Unit for Mental Illness
and the Oxford Vaccine Group, both UKCRN Registered Clinical Trials
Units. Members of the support team also carry out methodological
research, offer statistical advice to researchers and run statistical
courses.

The successful applicant would be expected to provide statistical
collaboration and consultancy with clinical researchers across several
medical areas. In addition, the post holder may participate in applied
statistics research and contribute to the Centre's teaching programme.

Applicants should ideally have a good (first or upper second) first
degree (preferably with a large statistical component) and a
postgraduate qualification in medical statistics (or a closely related
subject). They should preferably have least 3 years experience working
as a medical statistician, but more (or less) experienced candidates are
welcome to apply. Applicants should be fluent in key aspects of study
design and analysis, particularly applied to randomised clinical trials,
and is aware of the latest statistical techniques. Experience in the use
of statistical packages is essential together with good verbal and
written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex
statistical issues to non-statisticians.

The appointment will be for two years in the first instance. Salary will
be in the range (£25,472 - £40,157) per annum depending on
qualifications and experience (Agenda for Change Band 6 or 7). The post
is available immediately.

Potential applicants may wish to discuss the post informally with Ly-Mee
Yu (Tel: 01865 284405; email: [log in to unmask]).

Closing date 2nd DECEMBER 2010, interviews to be held on the 10TH
DECEMBER 2010 at the CSM offices.
