Several people have confirmed it's not me or my glasses - indeed I see
the illusion without my specs and with one eye covered.
Michaela Cottee [mailto:[log in to unmask]] has provided a
reference:
What you are experiencing when you look at this graph corresponds to a
well-known optical illusion called the "Necker Cube". There are
numerous websites that describe this illusion, including Wikipedia.
The Wikipedia article makes clear that the software writers should have
anticipated this and added perspective cues to the cube to stabilize it
for viewers. On content I'm guessing, but I think for each material it
shows three measurements as tops of columns with the mean of three
indicated as the ring of confidence. Perhaps this is the equivalent of
a font designer using "lorem ipsum"? You see the form without caring
about the content. The psychedelic bars suggest rather less thought!
