Hi Eleanor

I haven't come across this product before. I presume the idea is that the

temporary ramp is put down on a staircase, and a wheelchair user is rolled

down the staircase in their own chair.

My comments here aren't about any particular ramp product, and should not

be taken as NDA policy.

If I've interpreted the idea correctly, I'd have a number of concerns about

this approach. One of the functions of an evacuation chair is the automatic

braking function, that will generally hold the chair steady on a staircase.

With most of the evacuation chairs, you can actually let go of the chair on

the staircase, and it will remain in place safely. There would be no

braking function using a ramp, and I'd be concerned that the wheelchair

could run away with itself.

Also, I think that the incline that would result from using this kind of

ramp on a staircase would be quite steep - maybe around 30 degrees incline.

I would wonder if it is possible to safely manage an occupied wheelchair

over this kind of incline. Where will the helpers (who would presumably be

guiding the wheelchair from front and rear) be expected to walk? Will they

also be walking on the ramp, or will they be off to one side.

The one advantage of this approach would be that the user can remain in

their own wheelchair, and would not have to transfer. This transfer can be

difficult in terms of dignity and independence, and can even risk injury

for some people.

At a minimum, you would certainly need to test out this approach, to make

sure that the staff can safely manage a wheelchair user on this staircase.

Best regards

Shane

Hi all,

My local community arts centre would like to have this ramp as an

alternative for Evac chairs. There is a flight of 4 steps as an escape

route/exit in the eventuality of emergency evacuations/fire.

http://www.rollaramp.co.uk/index3/

Has anybody used them?

Advice would be much appreciated,

Eleanor Lisney
