ESRC COLLABORATIVE (CASE) PhD STUDENTSHIP (2010-2013) with Southern Staffordshire Partnership
Title: Another ‘New’ Regionalism? Landscapes of Economic Governance in the Coalition Era
Applications are invited for an ESRC Collaborative (CASE) PhD studentship under the supervision of Professor John Bryson and Dr Julian Clark, School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, in collaboration with the Southern Staffordshire Partnership. This research aims to explore the relationship between wealth creation and governance in the context of the demise of Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) and their replacement with Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). The context is the recently approved Greater Birmingham LEP (Birmingham, Solihull and East Staffordshire, Lichfield and Tamworth). LEPs are supposed to provide a platform for the private sector to have significant influence over mainstream budgets which for the Greater Birmingham LEP are in the order of £15 billion a year. LEPs are also intended to enable local areas to identify and focus effort on a number of important priorities and are also intended to improve co-ordination of existing efforts and expenditure. The studentship will explore the functioning economic geography of the southern Staffordshire economy, its connections to adjacent regions (Birmingham and elsewhere) and examine governance structures to determine in what way these act as a barrier or enabler to growth and innovation.
The studentship consists of an ESRC Maintenance Payment of £13,590, plus £2k from the SSP for 3 years (plus home fees). Preference will be given to applicants who have an ESRC-recognised Research Training Masters level degree (+3 route) and/or relevant research experience and training. Applications must meet ESRC residential eligibility requirements. Applicants should send their CV, letter of application and two references to Gretchel Coldicott (0121 414 6935, email: [log in to unmask]). For further details contact John Bryson ([log in to unmask]; Tel: 0121 414 5549) or Julian Clark ([log in to unmask], Tel: 0121 414 6262).
Closing Date for Applications is Monday 15th November 2010
