Hi All
Whatever we individually think of the manner of LR's post the point he
was trying to make was that this list is not a resource for people to
trawl for free ideas. However low budget your TV show it will still
have a budget and there are many people on this list who would really
benefit from a bit of that money. Not everyone here is externally
funded, many make their living from helping people like Peter.
Colin Murphy wrote:
"I wish to promote science and to sometimes seek support from the
group. Helping Peter would have helped to communicate Science...
Guidance would produce more valid experiments for a television show.
This would mean we would have worked toward a goal of communicating
science more effectively."
In this case helping Peter would not have helped communicate science
it would just have helped Peter. Colin, I think your motivation is
admirable and in different circumstances Peter would have got the he
was asking for but go back and read his original posting. As a
psychologist, as someone who communicates science freelance for their
living and as someone who's worked with TV companies I thought it was
insulting. Maybe not intentionally insulting but still insulting.
If Peter had said, "can you recommend someone to help me out with my
research, we can discuss terms off list" then I'm sure LR would have
kept quiet, he might have even got in contact to offer help to Peter.
What Peter (and plenty of others in the past) did was say "can you do
my work for me and for free".
To repeat what I said earlier in the thread I think we need to make
the purpose of this list more obvious so the Peter's of the future
don't assume they can use this as a free information source. As this
list is being monitored (and it must be as LR was banished within the
hour of his/her post) perhaps those monitoring could be as proactive
in dealing with unreasonable requests as they are with satirical
responses?
Best wishes
James
