London, October 22, 2010 - Bowker is pleased to announce that the Institute of Technology Tallaght has chosen Library Anywhere by LibraryThing for Libraries to provide a mobile catalogue within their Innovative Millennium library catalogue, making this the first library in the UK and Ireland to have successfully implemented this service.
Darren Roberts at Bowker commented:
Library Anywhere is an exciting development that provides a truly affordable solution to libraries who are seeking a way of show-casing their services via mobile devices. Being library system neutral, libraries of all types and sizes will be able to benefit from this innovation.
About Library Anywhere
Library Anywhere provides both mobile web (which works on any phone with a web browser), and native apps for iPhone, iTouch, and iPad, as well as Android and Blackberry. With a fully customisable home page, libraries can add a logo, or add links to a blog or Facebook page as well as creating pages with their own content. These can include book lists, announcements, and add links to their existing "ask a librarian" features, too, like instant messaging or texting. Existing LibraryThing for Libraries customers can benefit from integrated tags, access to over 500,000 reviews, recommendations related to each item and notes about other editions.
About the ITT Dublin (Institute of Technology Tallaght)
The ITT Dublin is home to almost over 5,000 registered library users on a campus in South County Dublin. They offer higher education programmes which reflect current and emerging knowledge and practices relevant to the individual and their region up to post doctoral level.
Niamh Walker-Headon, Systems Librarian at the library commented:
We were delighted when we heard that Library Thing were developing Library Anywhere. Over the past few years we have slowly noticed an increase in the number of users accessing our website using a mobile device (a 36% increase this October on last October). While the percentage of overall use is still small this growth is enough for us to want to provide a more appropriate interface to the web-opac for mobile device users. Indeed the Library Anywhere statistics show that the usage is mainly for the library catalogue.
Implementation was straight forward. The code was placed in the library website, with a small amount of editing in the user-friendly admin interface to input some local information, links to mobile friendly databases and the library logo and they were ready to implement the service.
Niamh also commented:
We have a small library staff, with limited time and skills in programming etc, making Library Anywhere a value for money solution in relation to both staff time expended and other similar products that we have investigated.
