I am a Bachelor of Science graduate of Geographical Information Science from the University of East London, in which I gained a first class degree. I graduated in 2009 and am looking to gain employment or initially some vital experience of working within the GIS, cartographic and/or geographical professions.
My personal interest and enthusiasm for all things cartographic and map related is truly heartfelt and rarely has a day gone past in my life in which I have not been involved in any personal activity of this nature. However, forging a career in this field cannot be reliant on enthusiasm alone and working to gain a related qualification is only the first hurdle to overcome. Trying to gain the relevant experience that most employers require has been more problematic, and thus has made my potential application for jobs quite difficult.
My experience of practising GIS is up to academic degree level, in which this course has helped me to produce work that has developed many significant skills with GIS that include:
Using digital equipment to produce land surveys of points from the real earth with co-ordinates and elevations;
Producing 2D large-scale digital maps and 3D models of geographical surface areas from surveyed data;
Analysing geo-demographic data and reproduced these into both spatial and non-spatial outputs;
Utilising cartographic symbolisation, topology, and map generalisation to display spatial data;
Creating databases of attributes using normalised table structures and SQL using Access software;
Producing data products that interpret everyday issues such as crime analysis, town planning, road routing, environmental changes and land parcels;
Making presentations of geography-related subject matter using Power Point and Wiki software, including the linking of maps, pictures and diagrams, with text, video and sound material.
I am currently working full-time as a street cleansing operative in North London, which I done for eighteen months, however I am very much looking to start new employment as soon as possible.
I am interested in working throughout the related geographical fields as has been mentioned above, especially cartography, but I would also include similar industries such as geology, environment, local authorities and natural history.
I presently live in East London and would ideally prefer to work in the Greater London and/or northern Home Counties area.
Please find attached my current updated CV for your reference. I will be grateful for your correspondence.
Many Thanks
Peit Lewis
