Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Research Associate - Statistical and Mathematical Epidemiology
Fixed Term, initially for 18 months
£30,566 - £40,406 Inclusive of High Cost Allowance
Increasing antimicrobial resistance is a global healthcare concern and a particular problem in the intensive care unit (ICU). Mathematical models have provided some theoretical support for antimicrobial stewardship programmes designed to limit emergence and spread of resistance; however, the extent to which such policies impact on the total burden and spread of resistance in the ICU is unclear.
You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of intensivists, microbiologists, pharmacists, epidemiologists and mathematical modellers set up to investigate the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance amongst main bacterial species of ICU using novel statistical and mathematical modelling approaches. The project, titled ‘Emergence and Spread of Antimicrobial Resistance in the ICU’ is funded by the Pfizer anti-infective research fund. The analyses will be evaluated in the context of what is known about pathways of resistance generation and will be critical for the evidence‐based design of antimicrobial stewardship programmes across UK hospitals.
The person we wish to appoint must have a Bachelors degree in mathematics, statistics, science or other discipline with a strong analytical component, and strong proven experience in relational database design and analysis of epidemiological data. A post-graduate qualification (preferably PhD) in statistics, mathematical modelling or statistical epidemiology of infectious diseases is highly desirable.
You will be employed by the Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) NHS Foundation Trust. The post, which will be based at St Thomas’ hospital, will be jointly supervised by the Directorate of Infection at GSTT, the University of Nottingham (School of Mathematical Sciences) and the University of Oxford (Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine). The post is funded for 18 months in the first instance with the possibility of extension, and is available from January 2011.
