You may want to have a look at:
http://neuro.debian.net/pkgs/spm8-common.html
and particularly the following note: "This software is written for matlab, but
initial tests indicate that some (significant) portion of it might also work
with octave. More tests are pending..."
I believe this is of quite broad interest, so hopefully some progress will soon
be made...

SPM community, anyway, as this represents a really commendable effort!
