Subject: Old Strand Union Workhouse, Cleveland Street, London under imminent threat of demolition
Dear Colleague,
I am a London-based historian of medicine, currently engaged up to my ears in trying to save a unique 18th century London workhouse/infirmary (occupied in the warehousing & healthcare of sick Londoners 1770s-2005) from obliteration for the erection of an uninteresting modern block.
More information may be found here:
http://www.westendextra.com/letters/2010/oct/forum-strand-union-workhouse-facing-demolition
Any help at all from you and/or your colleagues/friends would be GREATLY appreciated!
For further details please see www.workhouses.org & take the green link to Strand Union Workhouse, or look at the website http://fugitiveink.wordpress.com/2010/10/05/against-the-proposed-demolition-of-the-cleveland-street-workhouse/
The first site has an e-petition to sign, and both sites provide addresses for letters of concern. If in doubt as to whom you might write, aim for the top.
The planning meeting which might permit demolition is next month.
Thank-you very much for your help.
Warmest wishes,
Dr Ruth Richardson, DPhil., FRHistS.
