Hello everyone,
I was told about this forum by an colleague in the NHS Occ Health.
I left the NHS primary care last year to follow a career in Occupational Health. I was lucky enough to be given a role with a very small company (Two nurses) who took me on with no qualification in OH. I am just about to start my diploma this year and have been given the course details for the two years.
I don't quite know what I was expecting from the course, I was a bit surprised, and excited about the focus on public health etc.
My query is.....The occupational health surveillance that I currently carry out is mostly within the construction industry, since being employed I have been given some in house training on Audio, HAVS, Lung Function tests, Skin Assessments. The training that I has been based on a little bit of theory - mostly from the nurse advisor, and then shown how to carry out the procedure and fill in forms and when to refer to an OHP etc.
I have asked my employer for a little more information and to possibly attend training courses for what I do but I have been met with a little hesitation as though I am questioning what they have told me. I just want to be sure - and see it written somewhere credible that I am doing what I should be doing and giving the correct advice to the employees I assess. I have done numerous searches online for some occupational health nurse 'standards' and have lots of information but I thought that this forum may be able to give me some definitive resources that I could study and use.
I guess I though the OH course would give me more information on the practical side of the job - ie -general nursing training gave the correct methods for passing an NG tube!!
Now that I'm looking into other aspects of OH nursing I just see that there is so much more to the job that I initially thought - I’m excited about that - but I want to be a competent practitioner and find out quality information.
I do speak with my employer about things that I'm not sure of - absence management/case loads etc but the answer I am given is not to worry about that just now.... it's very frustrating.
I've always been taught that a candle never loses any of it's light by lighting another candle... it feels that no one at work is lighting my candle for fear of loosing their light!!!
If anyone can point me in the correct direction I would be very grateful!
Faye
