Dear List

We have had 5 people signed off with labrynthitis over the last week, they
all work in the same area, and was wondering if this is coincidence or
something else. The bulilding in which they all work has recently had a
refurbishment and the air conditioning has been changed. Am I clasping at
straws or could there be a correlation between the air conditioning and
increases in viral infections.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, also what advice do I need to share
with management,

Many thanks

Sarah

Dear list,

As Anne says in her email, we spent a long time (months) discussing this.
We knew what we should do but resisted being draconian. Those sharp winds
of public spending cuts, however, are blowing ever harder. We therefore put
this into operation not only because we think it is proper for the list, not
only because recruitment postings have driven away many of our international
subscribers, but now also to protect Jiscmail from becoming an easy target.

Please comply with this request. Anne has spelt out the alternative.

Kind regards

Kevin

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Recruitment and JISC

Dear list

A public body, the Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) fund this forum
which is a valuable resource and free at the point of delivery to
subscribers. Kevin Maguire, a lecturer at Nottingham Trent University and
myself manage the list on behalf of HEFCE. We are able to demonstrate to
HEFCE that the majority of postings enhance OH practice. The purpose of the
list is knowledge transfer, its purpose is not to be a cost free forum for
recruitment organisations.

We have received complaints from subscribers that postings on the list in
order to recruit permanent staff is an abuse of this resource and as we have
highlighted in the past JISC could easily be a target for spending cuts.
Furthermore, using the list as a free resource for advertising deprives the
OH press of advertising revenue which, in the current economic climate, also
puts their viability at risk.

Kevin and I have resisted intervening for some time. Over the last few
months in particular we have received an increasing number of complaints
"off list" from several subscribers about the number of recruitment related
emails. This has resulted in us taking the stance that the practice of
advertising for permanent posts, as in the email below, must stop. Some
months ago Kevin and I had discussed whether recruitment organisations
should be barred from joining the list. My feeling is that there is a
benefit to all of OH recruitment organisations using the resource to keep
updated on contemporary practice issues provided they do not use it as a
venue for free advertising. It is with regret that those subscribers who
continue to use the list as a free recruitment opportunity will be removed
from the list. They will only be allowed to rejoin on agreeing to comply in
the future.

This email will upset some subscribers but be welcomed by many others. I
will get my flack jacket and hard hat out in readiness.
