Applications are invited for a 15-month post-doctoral Research
Associateship in Music Computing and Psychology investigating listeners’
perceptions of musical shape. This a full-time, fixed-term appointment
from 17 January 2011 to 16 April 2012 (or an equivalent period beginning
no later than 1 April 2011). The post contributes to an ongoing project,
‘Shaping Music in Performance’, part of the AHRC Research Centre for
Musical Performance as Creative Practice (www.cmpcp.ac.uk).
This is an opportunity for a post-doctoral researcher with an unusual
but potentially highly productive combination of skills. You must a
background in computing and signal processing, and significant
experience in the visualisation of audio. You must be a performing
musician. You should be adaptable and able to work with advanced
technologies. Strong software development skills are essential: you
should be an experienced programmer in C and C++ with OpenGL. Experience
of programming haptic interfaces is desirable, as is experience of
experimental method in psychology, including statistical data analysis.
You will design and carry out experiments with musically experienced
participants who will use haptic interfaces to indicate their sense of
music as shaped. You will design and implement visualisations of the
resulting data matched to the audio data. The results will be presented
to participants, feedback gathered, and the software improved. You may
also analyse the data captured from a music psychology perspective.
There is scope for the post-holder to shape the direction of the project
and the methods used.
The appointment will be made on the Grade 6 scale at £33,070 per annum,
inclusive of £2,323 London Allowance, per annum. Benefits include an
