*PhD position in Theoretical Chemistry*
*Institute for Molecules and Materials*
*Radboud University Nijmegen*
*Job description*
The aim of this project is to compute cross sections and rate coefficients for
vibration-rotation inelastic collisions of molecules. You will use quantum
scattering methods and develop more efficient algorithms. You will also compute
intermolecular potentials using high-level ab initio methods. The research is
funded by NWO (http://www.nwo.nl/astrochemistry) and is part of the Gas-Phase
Astrochemistry Theme. Infrared radiation emitted by molecules such as CO, CO2,
H2O, and HCN is observed by ground-based telescopes such as the Very Large
Telescope of the European Southern Observatory or space-based telescopes such as
the Spitzer space telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory. To extract
information about planet and star formation, rates of collisions between these
molecules and He, H, and H2 are required. The collisions are studied
experimentally in our Institute for Molecules and Materials in Dave Parker’s
group. In this project you will collaborate with experimental physicists and
astrochemists.
*Requirements*
You should have:
- an MSc degree in Chemistry, Physics, or a related field;
- programming experience;
- a good command of written and spoken English.
*Organization*
Strategically located in Europe, Radboud University Nijmegen is one of the
leading academic communities in the Netherlands. A place with a personal touch,
where top-flight education and research take place on a beautiful leafy campus
in modern buildings with state-of-art facilities.
You will be working with the Theoretical Chemistry group at the Institute of
Theoretical Chemistry. The general research theme of this group is the
theoretical and computational study of molecular properties, interactions
between molecules, and (photo)chemical processes by quantum mechanical methods,
as well as the development of new methods, algorithms, and computer programs. A
separate research line focuses on the interaction between molecules in solid
molecular materials and the kinetics within these materials using molecular
dynamics and Monte Carlo techniques. The Theoretical Chemistry group is part of
the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM), which is a highly
interdisciplinary research institute comprising theoretical and experimental
groups with both physics and chemistry backgrounds.
