Post Doctoral Position at the Advanced Light Source and Chemical Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Position Description
The Post doc will be responsible for testing design improvement and implementation of a variety of in situ cells for use at the Advanced Light Source and in ultra-fast laboratory based studies. These cells will be used to monitor chemical and morphological changes during reaction using a variety of soft X-ray techniques. To enable experiments that exploit these capabilities a series of in situ cells are being developed. These cells will incorporate the ability to expose microscopic samples to reactive gases, under ambient or high temperature, as well as  water vapor. The development of these cells will ultimately enable a wide range of experiments at such microscopes. Ultimately, these cells will be applied in a variety of laboratory (electron microscopies and micro-Raman spectroscopy) and synchrotron based soft x-ray experiments covering a broad range of basic and applied sciences. Initial studies will focus on reactions of atmospheric aerosols, reactions of mineral surfaces and water vapor uptake. A motivated candidate will enjoy some freedom in applying these techniques to other applications. Developing the ability to control and monitor the sample environment while using x-rays as a probe is essential for advancing studies in environmental science, catalysis, and materials research. Prototype devices for gas/liquid flow and heating exist and require testing and characterization to design 2nd generation devices. 

Requirements: 
Ph.D. (within the last three years) in chemistry, physics, material sciences, or a related field. Ability to work independently to test, characterize (temperature gradient on sub micron scale and flow) and improve the design of in situ cells. Required skills include basic knowledge of electronics, power supplies, and knowledge of gas flow, temperature measurement, and minor technical drawing. Experience with in situ cells, or significant hands-on laboratory experience including design and development of experimental apparatus. Exquisite problem solving skills and analytical abilities are needed. The ability to interact in a productive manner with other post docs and scientists is essential. Prepare oral and written presentations on development and experimental results. Demonstrated record of achievement and publication in physical sciences, material sciences, or a related discipline.

Other Skills of Interest:
Testing and design improvements of novel micro (& nano) fluidic devices. Experience in micro Raman spectroscopy, soft -ray spectroscopy, or a variety of microscopies (TEM/SEM/AFM).  Clean room experience. Fabricate and assemble in situ reactors. Develop collaborations involving the use of the in situ cells. Collaborate with staff scientists to develop these in situ cells. Expertise with Labview, Matlab, and basic machining skills. Previous microfabrication, nano fabrication or lithography experience. Direct experience designing/fabricating in situ cells, microfluidic cells, lab-on-chip, or MEMS.

This is a one year appointment with a possiblity for renewal up to two years depending upon satisfactory performance, continued availability of funding and on-going laboratory operational needs.
