Research Associate Opening
Air Force Research Laboratory - Space Vehicles Directorate
The AFRL Space Chemistry Laboratory, located at Hanscom AFB, near Boston, MA, is seeking an experimental physical chemist at the PhD level to study chemical processes associated with the space environment. The position calls for a highly motivated individual to conduct laboratory research in several areas: (1) hyperthermal chemical interactions between spacecraft effluent and the space environment, (2) fundamental chemistry and physics occurring at interfaces of ionic liquids in electrospray jets, (3) development of micro- and nano-particle trap experiments, (4) atom charge conversion at nano-structured surfaces. Desired skills include ion beams/optics, molecular beams, mass spectrometers, lasers, optical detection, computer interfacing and data analysis.
The Space Chemistry program is funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. In June of 2011, the laboratory is scheduled to move to Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM, where a new state-of-the-art facility has been constructed.
Applicants must be US citizens. For a prospective or recent (past five years) PhD, the preference is to hire into a National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral Associateship. For a more senior applicant, either an NRC Senior Associateship or scientist contractor support position will be considered. See http://www7.nationalacademies.org/rap/ for a description of the NRC program stipend, benefits, and policies under the AFRL section. The submission package includes a modest-length proposal written in consultation with lab personnel, together with supporting documentation; the next proposal due date is November 1, with subsequent deadlines every 3 months. Interested candidates should contact Dr. Dale Levandier (781-377-2331; [log in to unmask]) or Dr. Benjamin Prince (781-377-4531; [log in to unmask])
