Ms Sarah Wharton, University of Liverpool,
'The White House and the Grindhouse: US Politics and the New Grindhouse Cinema'
New Grindhouse Cinema (more commonly known as "torture porn"), because of its focus on graphic violence and scenes of torture, has regularly been derided as reactionary, with some critics going so far as to suggest it represents the death of subversive American horror cinema (Sharrett, 2009). However, while films such as Hostel (Eli Roth, 2005) and Saw (James Wan, 2004) certainly do contain reactionary elements, they could also be said to contain highly progressive ones. By not alienating any audience members, this political ambiguity potentially opens the films up to wider audiences than they would have necessarily attracted had they stuck to one political point of view. This paper will explore this concept by, firstly, addressing the terminology of "torture porn" and making recommendations for the adoption of the term "new grindhouse cinema." Secondly it will examine political ambiguity in these films by analysing the Saw series, as well as films such as Hostel, which look at Americans outside of America.
