Philippa Joseph (Oxford Brookes University)
Travel, Acquisition, Display: Don Fadrique Enriquez de Ribera and the
Casa de Pilatos, Seville, c.1518-1540
This paper is based on Philippa Joseph’s PhD thesis, submitted in May
this year, and explores the personal possessions of a wealthy
sixteenth-century Spanish nobleman, Don Fadrique Enríquez de Ribera
(1476-1539), whose principal residence was the so-called, Casa de
Pilatos, a beguilingly beautiful urban palace in the centre of Seville.
Don Fadrique’s possessions included expensive tapestry sets, musical
instruments, coins and medals, altarpieces, and holy relics, many of
them acquired during his two-year trip to Italy and the Holy Land
(1518-20). Studied together, they give us a clearer picture of Don
Fadrique’s tastes, interests, and social position. In doing so, they
also act as a prism through which to better understand the stylistic
complexities of the Casa de Pilatos.
By profession, Philippa Joseph is a publisher of academic journals in
the humanities, but has long held a passion for Renaissance Europe,
which she has explored through her MA and PhD studies, both undertaken
part-time at Oxford Brookes University. Philippa has published a number
of papers on aspects of academic publishing, as well as in the journal,
Renaissance Studies. She is currently considering how best to publish
her doctoral thesis
