Producing history: oral historians as the 'middle men' of history
Christopher Webb will draw on his experiences as an oral history 'worker'
within the heritage industry to highlight the dilemma of maintaining one's
independence as a conscientious historian while producing history as a
commodity.

Disasters and their aftermaths: Life history approaches
Natural and human disasters such as earthquakes, floods and fires are
increasingly prominent. Dr Kumbetoglu will discuss the benefits of using
life history and qualitative research methods through which to understand
the experiences of those who suffer ? and survive ? them, drawing on the
case study of earthquake survivors in Turkey.

Gerry Holloway, Lorraine Sitzia, Jenna Bailey, Ben Jones, Sarah Hitchins,
Jo Palache will share the challenges and intrigues of interviewing staff,

University of Sussex. They will situate the project in the context of
debates about institutional memory and the oral history of professions.
