As a mere spring chicken of 45, I find that applying for some posts, despite being sufficiently qualified, I am regarded as too old to be employed! So when exactly is one considered to be old, and what is the correct way to refer to them?
Furthermore, I loath the political correctness of it all. When I reach a real old age, all I want, will be to be treated with the same respect I received during my younger years. I am not bothered about the label.
A friend recently had cause to phone her bank. When the operator discovered she was 60, her attitude changed. She spoke clearly, and slowly and condescendingly referred to her as "dear". This infuriated her as she is still a practicing barrister with more than her fair share of intellectual marbles.
