Dear Jiscmailers,
I don't usually use the MO list to promote my not-quite-MO interests but
thought anyone on the JISC list living locally (near Brighton) might be
interested in this talk which in fact relates to MO themes.
I recommend the speaker, Ben Rogaly, who is a colleague at Univ Sussex and
has been interested in using MO for his research. The MOA does hold
material on "Englishness" and national identity. Some of the early material
(1930s &40s) is embedded in directive replies on attitudes to other
nationalities, for example, or in reply to an extraordinary directive on
"Race" in June 1939. More recently we have sent out directives in the 90s
on "Coming to Britain", "Core British Values" and (in the 80s) "Buying
British" and on migration generally.
These talks (HandsOff talks) are open to anyone and are well organised and
disciplined (ie no one in the audience is allowed to ramble on or be
rude/disrepectful to other people). They are organised by my friend Kate
Page and can be thoroughly recommended. See below......

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ENGLISH?
•Is there an English 'national identity'?
•If so, does it change over time?
•How does migration affect 'Englishness'?
