Apologies if this message falls outside the remit of this list...
The former Strand Union Workhouse on Cleveland Street, WC1, until recently the
out-patients department for the Middlesex Hospital, is under threat of demolition.
Apart from being virtually the only surviving workhouse building in central
London, the site has some historical associations which make it of particular value.
I understand that the site was recommended for listing by EH but the proposal
was overruled by a minister in the last government.
I've just heard that the closing date for objections to the redevelopment plans
has been brought forward to today. If this is something in which you may have an
interest, more information on the site and on how to object to the plans can be
found at www.workhouses.org.uk/savethestrand
At this stage, only emailed objections would be be of any relevance.
Kind regards,
Peter Higginbotham
