Dear Christine
Before you can determine the most appropriate coping strategy for anyone who has the dyslexic symptom, you first have to determine the underlying cognitive cause of their dyslexic symptom.
Currently international dyslexia research has focused on three cognitive subtypes of dyslexia:- auditory, visual, and attentional. Each of the cognitive subtypes can have a range of cognitive deficits or disorders, all which need to be assessed, and diagnosed. Some dyslexics may have one or more cognitive issues which cause them to have the dyslexic symptom.
Once a full multi-discipline professional assessment has been made it is them possible to determine the type of remedial strategies which would be most affect for the dyslexic individual.
The best summary of the Cognitive subtypes of dyslexia can be found in a 2008 research paper "Cognitive Subtypes of Dyslexia" which can be freely downloaded from
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18389017
and is also listed in the CiteULike Developmental Dyslexia research paper group

and you might also find the CiteULike Alexia (acquired dyslexia) research paper group of some interest as well
