Subject: FW: Conference - Inspired to Learn? Thursday November 18, ICO Conference Centre, London W1, 2pm
With apologies for cross-posting
Inspired to Learn?
A conference offered by the Academic and Professional Publishing Division of
The Publishers Association
18 November at the ICO Conference Centre, 22 Berners Street, London W1T 3DD
The conference begins at 2pm and will conclude with a wine reception.
Inspired to Learn? aims to examine the changing resources needs of the
communities served by academic publishers; to discover how publishers are
addressing these; and to explore how publishers, academics and librarians
can work more closely together to continue to develop relevant,
cost-effective teaching, learning and research materials in the current
economic climate.
The conference will be chaired by David House, Chairman, Board of
Management, JISC Collections and formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Brighton.
Some conference highlights:
* Keynote address. David House, Chairman, Board of Management, JISC
Collections and formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Brighton, will outline the teaching and funding challenges currently facing
universities, and how the provision of inspired resources can help
* Creating, developing and using an e-learning platform. Michelle
Neil, VP & Director, Higher Education Digital Programmes, Pearson
International, and Elizabeth Jones, Teaching Fellow in Economics, University
of Exeter Business School will share insights
* Re-engineering the business model. Caren Milloy, Head of Projects
at JISC Collections, will describe new ways of developing business models
and how so far they have worked in practice
* Discoverability, Definition, Deployment: the challenges of making
e-publishing visible. Sarah Pearson, E-Resources Co-ordinator at the
University of Birmingham and Chair of KBART, Robert Faber, Editorial
Director of Scholarly and General Reference Publishing at OUP, and Kieron
Smith, MD of The Book Depository, will demonstrate how they are rising to
the challenges posed by 'discoverability'
* Student panel. Students from several key disciplines will each give
short talks on what types of resource they like best or find most useful,
and then take questions from the floor.
The formal part of the conference will conclude with an open forum.
Who should attend?
We hope that the conference programme will appeal to a wide constituency of
lecturers, librarians, publishers and students of publishing. It is
particularly aimed at those working in the development, use, sale or
purchase of electronic publications and platforms of all kinds.
