Abstract
Simulation techniques have the attractive features of allowing the construction of realistic, testable and modifiable models of real-world phenomena. This makes them of particular interest in the policy field. Our research group has used micro-simulation techniques to represent the role of primary care in the dynamics of an ageing society and to construct a more generic modelling tool for social policy in New Zealand. This talk will outline these two applications and open up for discussion the general area of simulation modelling and its use for both policy-making and theory-building. (Note: No technical background in simulation techniques is assumed for this talk).
