Masters and Ph.D. Studentships, Departments of Radiology and
Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of British Columbia
The Departments of Radiology and Electrical and Computer Engineering
at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invite applications for
enrollment in September 2011 from students interested in pursuing a
Masters or Doctoral level degree in the area of medical image
analysis. The successful candidate will be performing research in a
highly interdisciplinary environment to develop new software
algorithms for using magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of the brain and
spinal cord to explore and understand the pathology and clinical
impact of neurodegenerative diseases.
An undergraduate degree in computer science, engineering or related
discipline is a prerequisite to enrollment, and preference will be
given to applicants with experience in the following topics:
-Computer vision (e.g., image segmentation, image registration, shape
modelling, level-sets)
-Signal and image processing (e.g., image resampling, Fourier
transform)
-Matrix algebra (e.g., singular value decomposition, 3D
transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, principal component
analysis)
-Statistics and probability theory (e.g., probability distributions,
t-test, Bayesian and frequentist inference)
-Image processing libraries, particularly ITK and VTK
-Computer Graphics (e.g., volume rendering, meshes, geometry)
-Manuscript writing for international conferences and journals
The student will be expected to have excellent programming (C++ and
templated programming) skills, and must be proficient on a Unix/Linux
platform. Strong mathematical and communication skills (written and
oral) are also essential.
The student will enroll in UBC's innovative Biomedical Engineering
Program, which emphasizes a balance of biomedical engineering and life
science study with a focus on clinical and industrial application.
Full financial support in the form of tuition waivers, research
assistantships, and/or scholarship top-ups are available for all
qualified students.
