Greg, I may be wide of the mark here, but discussion of the type of shots you're looking for has made me think of the short sequence Kassovitz filmed by suspending the camera from a balloon (I think) in 'La Haine'. It's brilliant because the camera travels with the rap music issuing from a flat in the inner-city estate (banlieue) the film is set in AND continues the relaxedly (dope-)drugged consciousness of the black character Hub from a few minutes earlier. It's about a kind of overview, escapism and uncertainty (the shot rocks) all at the same time.
